If Buerkle felt concern for women half as much as she feels concern for her own ideology and that of her followers, she would hold in esteem and support Planned Parenthood as much as she does Vera House.

Ann Marie Buerkle: She's Disgusted ... Call a Waaaambulance
Waaaa...Ann Marie is disgusted. (See bottom of blog for coverage of Ann Marie's disgust.) Join the club. Blueskygirl has been disgusted since November.
Buerkle cries foul and claims the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee puts politics above people.
Hmmmm...Blueskygirl sits sipping her coffee this morning and wondering how that argument squares with Buerkle's having done not one damn thing to create jobs? Her denial of global warming and all its implications? Her blithe answers to questions about energy policy? Her incessant push to destroy Planned Parenthood? Her wicked support by silence for wars that have cost this country 1.2 Trillion (that's not a typo) dollars and the lives of thousands of soldiers, not to mention the costs to whole civilian populations of Iraq, Libya, Afghanistan and Pakistan?
Yeah, Ann Marie, you sure show us every day how you put people above politics. Boy, is Blueskygirl chastened!
So, what, exactly, about the robo calls isn't true, Ann Marie? Because you do support tax breaks for millionaires and corporations.
You do continue to support a Medicare voucher system that will quickly become unaffordable for many seniors.
You do keep pushing the idea that Medicare won't change for people over 55. That is, Blueskygirl admits, consistent with your narrow view of your job when it comes to serving the people in your district. Let younger people deal with the massive problems you and your miserable excuse for parties, Republican and Tea, are fighting to create.
Blueskygirl gets the distinct feeling that what really disgusts Buerkle is having to face real music. Her constituents are upset, and they should be upset. Buerkle is a foot soldier for politicians who intend to continue to gut programs that help people with reduced and limited resources while pandering to corporations and the wealthy.
Buerkle is at her best not having to actually listen to real people with real concerns. She's got all the answers, supplied to her by daily Republican and Teaparty briefings on how to handle the folks back home.
That's why Paul Singer and company, (see Blueskygirl's blogs here,) love people like dilettante politician Buerkle.
New York Times columnist Paul Krugman explains how the Republicans and the Teaparty plan to destroy Medicare:
Between an aging population and rising health costs, then, preserving anything like the programs for seniors we now have will require a significant increase in spending on these programs as a percentage of G.D.P. And unless we offset that rise with drastic cuts in defense spending — which Republicans, needless to say, oppose — this means a substantial rise in overall spending, which we can afford only if taxes rise.
So when people like Mr. Boehner reject out of hand any increase in taxes, they are, in effect, declaring that they won’t preserve programs benefiting older Americans in anything like their current form. It’s just a matter of arithmetic.
Which brings me back to those Republican freshmen. Last year, older voters, who split their vote almost evenly between the parties in 2008, swung overwhelmingly to the G.O.P., as Republicans posed successfully as defenders of Medicare. Now Democrats are pointing out that the G.O.P., far from defending Medicare, is actually trying to dismantle the program. So you can see why those Republican freshmen are nervous.
But the Democrats aren’t engaging in scare tactics, they’re simply telling the truth. Policy details aside, the G.O.P.’s rigid anti-tax position also makes it, necessarily, the enemy of the senior-oriented programs that account for much of federal spending. And that’s something voters ought to know.

“Disgusted” is how a freshman Republican House member told HUMAN EVENTS she felt after a day of her office answering telephone calls generated by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee that led to tearful constituents asking whether the GOP lawmaker wanted to “end Medicare.”
“Some of my constituents were in tears and probably can’t sleep tonight because robocalls from the DCCC told them that the [House Republican] budget will get rid of their Medicare,” an outraged Rep. Ann Marie Buerkle (R.-N.Y.) told us. “Those kind of tactics are mean-spirited and they lack integrity.
“I’m disgusted at the DCCC because, clearly, they put politics above people.”
A clearly angry Buerkle contacted HUMAN EVENTS last Thursday evening, after her district office was deluged with what she said were “at least one hundred telephone calls from constituents generated by robocalls from the DCCC claiming that I was supporting a ‘plan to end Medicare’ that increases the debt because of ‘more tax breaks for millionaires and corporations.’ ”
“Finally, after our staff left in the early evening, I began answering some of the calls myself,” recalled Buerkle, one of three former nurses elected to the House in the Republican sweep last fall and a strong supporter of the Medicare reform plan in the GOP budget. “Some of my constituents were in tears, and asked me why Republicans wanted to get rid of their Medicare. I explained—to several callers, in fact—that the Republican plan does not ‘get rid of Medicare,’ that it doesn’t even affect anyone over 54, and preserves health care for the next generation of senior citizens.”
The Syracuse-area lawmaker also told HUMAN EVENTS that the technology in the robocalls “apparently permitted the person receiving them to just press a number and be connected to my office. And they were urged to protest what the Democrats claimed was the Republican position on Medicare. This is something we’re going to have to face and deal with.”
Buerkle wasn’t the only House member getting “Mediscare” calls. Her office told me that she was one of 13 House Republicans on a DCCC “target list” for robocalls that refer to them as backers of a “plan to end Medicare.” ( Politico later published the list of “Targeted Members,” which includes 12 freshman Republicans and six-term Rep. Steve King of Iowa. All are considered vulnerable to a Democratic assault next year.)
Last month, Democrat Kathy Hochul won a nationally watched special election for the House seat in a Buffalo, N.Y., area district that had been in Republican hands for four decades. Because her campaign was based in part on charges that her opponent wanted to “end Medicare,” it was widely expected that Democrats would expand this kind of broadside nationwide and especially at GOP lawmakers in marginal districts.
However, by upsetting senior citizens to the point of tears in some cases, Buerkle charges, Democrats “have gone too far—and I’m disgusted.”

Why Only Vera House?
My respect for any agency that supports girls and women is great, and it is a good day when any public service agency makes the news.
When Ann Marie Buerkle is public in Washington about her support for Vera House in Syracuse, an agency that has long been rock solidly there for women and men who are victims of domestic violence and/or rape, I applaud her. That we are reminded of the need and the services every year at this time by the White Ribbon Campaign is important.
Therefore I cannot for the life of me think why Ann Marie would be so totally against Planned Parenthood. In so many ways Planned Parenthood and Vera House are similar, and the two agencies share many of the same values and concerns.
I cannot document with numbers but I think, based on years of work in many areas of social services, that there are crossover service needs between these two agencies and many other local programs as well.
Vera House and Planned Parenthood do not offer duplicate services. They offer companion services because any person who comes for services at either one may well have more than one need, not always able to be filled by the primary agency.
For example:

- A woman who has been raped may also want reproductive services, up to and including, though not necessarily, an abortion. Planned Parenthood is an option.
- While a woman is being seen for family planning services, the nurse may learn that the woman is in a situation at home that includes domestic abuse. Her children may also be in danger. The family may need sheltering. Vera House can help.
- A man or woman being abused at home may realize she/he needs to be tested for sexually transmitted diseases and ask for a referral to PP.
- A clinic patient may disclose her own childhood abuse and be referred to Vera House for counseling.
The budgets for the two agencies, Vera House and Planned Parenthood have many similarities. What I want to address from here onward is that both receive a share of their budgets from government entities. In fact they cannot operate without these monies. Our federal and state governments have both deemed human services as areas that smaller communities and individuals cannot provide by themselves.

Next is the national budget for Planned Parenthood. I do not have local numbers but believe that local numbers are more or less reflected in the national budget. The actual numbers for the two entities, Vera House and Planned Parenthood are obviously therefore miles apart. But there are programs comparable to Vera House all over the land who receive federal Titles money, for which I am thankful. I show this next budget to illustrate how Planned Parenthood compares to Vera House for reliance upon government funding:
Let me also say, for the record, that I wish sister agencies could look out for each other. What is being done to women by harming Planned Parenthood is violence of a sort. I wish for Vera House and its counterparts to find public ways to advocate for Planned Parenthood.

Ann Marie, Do These New Friends Make You Proud?
Abortions make up no more than three per cent of Planned Parenthood's services. Yet you, Ann Marie, would cut ALL federal funding despite the fact that using federal funds for abortion services is already disallowed by the Hyde amendment.
The current amendment to defund Planned Parenthood is co-sponsored by several US House representatives including Buerkle. These are among the most powerful people in the nation. Who, exactly, are these people?
Rep. Mike Pence (R-IN) Tea Party Caucuser with Michelle Bachmann; happy to have a total government shutdown (possibly by this Friday) rather than compromise (black and white thinking is immature on any developmental scale); explained his sponsorship of the amendment with fabrications, distortions, and lies because he can't make his arguments using the truth

I ask you all, also, what have you done about jobs? You promised jobs. Where are they? What are you doing to increase expenditures where there will be a net gain of jobs?
How does withdrawing government money from communities create stronger communities? How does cutting money for the education of children create a stronger nation, competitive in the coming decades?
Ann Marie, why are you wasting taxpayer time hurting real people? Why aren't you finding ways to use your taxpayer funded power to make this a strong, healthy, productive nation?
If you truly desire to find common ground with half of your constituents up here in Central New York, you might like to look over the credentials of the people with whom you are consorting in D.C. They are not helping anything, and we want so much more from you.

FYI, those of you for whom Buerkle is a relatively new phenom, it was on this same day, July 6, 1989, that she and her cohorts demonstrated their respect for life, and their compassion for women and health care providers, by bringing to Planned Parenthood an illegally procured, blackened foetus in a jar. During this time she was the local spokesperson for Operation Rescue and associated with extremist Randall Terry; a decade earlier she had started the local chapter of Friends for Life. |

Live Action’s ongoing smear campaign against Planned Parenthood, where actors playing a pimp and a prostitute used hidden cameras to try to dupe clinic staffers into a sex trafficking ring, has ran into numerous hurdles. The radical group’s videos have found to be heavily doctored and actually show clinic workers acting properly and lawfully. In fact, before Live Action even released the edited tapes, Planned Parenthood alerted the FBI about visitors who sought advice for “underage girls who were part of a sex trafficking ring.” Live Action is led by anti-choice radical Lila Rose, who previously collaborated with notorious trickster James O’Keefe and likes to compare herself to Martin Luther King Jr. Rose also has a long history of deceptively editing videos.
But the Religious Right and leading Republicans have increasingly embraced Rose and her hoax videos, and Rep. Mike Pence (R-IN) is using the discredited videos to promote his bill that would end federal funding of Planned Parenthood, imperiling women’s health services.
Tomorrow, leading GOP congressmen plan to join Rose and Pence to demand Congress strip Planned Parenthood of its funding. Congressmen Jean Schmidt (R-OH), Virginia Foxx (R-NC) , Vicky Hartzler (R-MO) , Renee Ellmers (R-NC), Ann Marie Buerkle (R-NY), and Andy Harris (R-MD) will speak with Rose and Pence, along with Marjorie Dannenfelser of Susan B. Anthony List and Penny Nance of Concerned Women for America.
All of the Congressmen mentioned have a long history with extreme anti-choice activism:
Schmidt railed against reproductive rights in a speech to 1st graders in an elementary school; Buerkleserved as the spokesperson for the extreme group Operation Rescue; Hartzler backed bills that would compel women seeking an abortion to view their sonograms and even supported legislation that would force the state to file murder charges against women and their doctors if they performed a late-term abortion; Foxx wants to ban emergency contraception like RU-486 and Ella; Harris wanted to allow pharmacists to refuse contraception to customers and challenged a moderate pro-choice Republican incumbent in 2008, and Ellmers is an avowed opponent of legal abortion who recently justified receiving taxpayer-subsidized health care by claiming that Washington DC is too expensive to live in with a $174,000 per year salary, while pushing to defund health services for low-income women.
But having such an extreme group of anti-choice congressmen standing with Rose is no surprise, as Rose herself has called for abortions to “be done in the public square.”

The Historical Susan B. Anthony Had Real Values for Women in Mind When She Protested!

• NY-25: The namejacking anti-abortion Susan B. Anthony List is running an ad thanking Ann Marie Buerkle for her vote to cut off funding to Planned Parenthood. Kudos to Dave Catanese, who says the size of the buy (which includes online ads) is $75,000, and that the ad itself is expected to run 182 times.
Wonder how much AMB profited from that marriage?
In 2010 Susan B. Anthony List contributed $10,000 to AMB's campaign. That is, by far, the top dollar amount they donated to any House of Representatives candidate last year.
