Buerkle and the Frederick Douglass Foundation

The Frederick Douglass Foundation, like Susan B. Anthony List, sports a co-opted name.

Blueskygirl suspects that Frederick Douglass would not like to see his name blasphemed. He would not have honored Ann Marie Buerkle, R NY. He would have strongly disagreed with her on her beliefs and record.

Douglass devoted his life to working against oppression, slavery, women's second class status, lack of a good education for all, and falseness.

Back in December 2010, the Frederick Douglass Foundation congratulated Buerkle for her win [from the blog The 21st Century Abolitionist]:

Anne Marie Buerkle (R-NY) Un-Seats Incumbent Dan Maffei in Congressional win for the 25th District

NEW YORK- The Frederick Douglass Foundation of New York is proud of Congressman-elect Ann Marie Buerkle.  She will be the first Congressional member of the Frederick Douglass Foundation.

Republican candidate, Ann Marie Buerkle (NY-25), fought an uphill battle against incumbent Democrat congressman Dan Maffei and solidified the win despite running in a heavily Democrat district.  Greatly underfunded compared to her opponent, Buerkle ran an amazing campaign, holding firm to Jesus Christ, free-market principles and respect for the life of the unborn.

Ann Marie Buerkle, a pro-life woman and staunch conservative, didn't take any voter for granted.  She has proven again that when pro-life and pro-family principles are articulated properly by candidates that the people make the right choice.  By being involved, attentive and responsive, Congressman-elect Ann Marie Buerkle proved she is the right kind of person to get the change the country really needs- not the socialist snake oil the President is constantly peddling.  She is the kind of Republican we are proud to help get elected.

On behalf of the Frederick Douglass Foundation, we congratulate Ann Marie Buerkle for her tremendous victory and look forward to working with her in the future.

In March, according to TeamWatch NY, the Frederick Douglass Foundation gave Buerkle an award:

March 21, 2011 at 6:42 pm
Congresswoman Buerkle was honored to recieve (sic) the Harriet Tubman Trailblazer Award from the Frederick Douglass Foundation.  She is the first member of the foundation to be elected to the House of Representatives.
Harriet Tubman was an abolishonist and humanitarian who lived in the Congresswoman’s home town of Auburn, New York.

Little known fact for non-Rochesterites: a major bridge in downtown Rochester is named the Frederick Douglas-Susan B. Anthony Memorial Bridge.

Extremist Anti-Woman Buerkle Links Up With Lila Rose and Live Action's Hoax

With great thanks to Right Wing Watch:

Republican Congressmen Embrace Lila Rose and Live Action’s Hoax Videos

Live Action’s ongoing smear campaign against Planned Parenthood, where actors playing a pimp and a prostitute used hidden cameras to try to dupe clinic staffers into a sex trafficking ring, has ran into numerous hurdles. The radical group’s videos have found to be heavily doctored and actually show clinic workers acting properly and lawfully. In fact, before Live Action even released the edited tapes, Planned Parenthood alerted the FBI about visitors who sought advice for “underage girls who were part of a sex trafficking ring.” Live Action is led by anti-choice radical Lila Rose, who previously collaborated with notorious trickster James O’Keefe and likes to compare herself to Martin Luther King Jr. Rose also has a long history of deceptively editing videos.
But the Religious Right and leading Republicans have increasingly embraced Rose and her hoax videos, and Rep. Mike Pence (R-IN) is using the discredited videos to promote his bill that would end federal funding of Planned Parenthood, imperiling women’s health services.
Tomorrow, leading GOP congressmen plan to join Rose and Pence to demand Congress strip Planned Parenthood of its funding. Congressmen Jean Schmidt (R-OH), Virginia Foxx (R-NC) , Vicky Hartzler (R-MO) , Renee Ellmers (R-NC), Ann Marie Buerkle (R-NY), and Andy Harris (R-MD) will speak with Rose and Pence, along with Marjorie Dannenfelser of Susan B. Anthony List and Penny Nance of Concerned Women for America.
All of the Congressmen mentioned have a long history with extreme anti-choice activism:
Schmidt railed against reproductive rights in a speech to 1st graders in an elementary school; Buerkleserved as the spokesperson for the extreme group Operation Rescue; Hartzler backed bills that would compel women seeking an abortion to view their sonograms and even supported legislation that would force the state to file murder charges against women and their doctors if they performed a late-term abortion; Foxx wants to ban emergency contraception like RU-486 and Ella; Harris wanted to allow pharmacists to refuse contraception to customers and challenged a moderate pro-choice Republican incumbent in 2008, and Ellmers is an avowed opponent of legal abortion who recently justified receiving taxpayer-subsidized health care by claiming that Washington DC is too expensive to live in with a $174,000 per year salary, while pushing to defund health services for low-income women.
But having such an extreme group of anti-choice congressmen standing with Rose is no surprise, as Rose herself has called for abortions to “be done in the public square.”

The Historical Susan B. Anthony Had Real Values for Women in Mind When She Protested!

...from Swing State Project's  http://www.swingstateproject.com  savvy commentary:

NY-25: The namejacking anti-abortion Susan B. Anthony List is running an ad thanking Ann Marie Buerkle for her vote to cut off funding to Planned Parenthood. Kudos to Dave Catanese, who says the size of the buy (which includes online ads) is $75,000, and that the ad itself is expected to run 182 times.

Wonder how much AMB profited from that marriage?

In 2010 Susan B. Anthony List contributed $10,000 to AMB's campaign. That is, by far, the top dollar amount they donated to any House of Representatives candidate last year.

Pro-Life Feminism? Nice Try, Ladies

Blue Sky Girl deplores Susan B. Anthony List's substitution of "pro-abortion" for Dan Maffei's pro-choice position. Portraying support for what is a woman's personal and difficult decision as support for an altogether different policy is deceitful. The alternative to "pro-life" is "pro-choice."

Rejoice that we live in a country where "choice" is a choice that one is free to accept or reject.

SBA List Claims 'Year of the Pro-life Woman' Victory in Buerkle NY-25 Win
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the Susan B. Anthony List celebrated the election of the eighth pro-life woman U.S. Representative in the 112th Congress and a major upset in Ann Marie Buerkle’s defeat of pro-abortion incumbent Dan Maffei.
“Ann Marie Buerkle’s win is historic for women, the unborn and New York’s 25th Congressional District,” SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser said.  “A pro-life gain in this district – thought by many to be out of reach – affirms the wave of pro-life feminine leadership pouring into the 112th Congress.  That wave, including Buerkle’s election, further confirms that 2010 is the Year of the Pro-Life Woman.
“As the first woman elected to Congress from NY-25, she brings years of experience speaking out for Life and feminine leadership harkening back to its roots in authentic pro-life feminism.  At the same time, she replaces a consistently pro-abortion vote with dependable advocacy for Life on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives. ”
As a registered nurse and mother of six, Buerkle will contribute a unique medical background and a strong commitment to ending taxpayer funding of abortion to Congress.
In the weeks leading up to the November general election, the SBA List mailed nearly 23,000 households in NY-25 and bundled nearly $24,000 for the Buerkle campaign.  The SBA List spent $2.3 million electing pro-life women to congressional and statewide office, resulting in a 70 percent increase in the number of pro-life women in the U.S. House of Representatives, an increase in the number of pro-life women governors from one to four and the election of the 112th Congress’ first pro-life woman Senator.  SBA List-endorsed candidates won 83 percent of the time in SBA List-versus-EMILY’s List head-to-head races.
