The Story of Broke

The creator of this video presents an excellent overview of the wrong-headed argument that our country is broke, when in fact we are a wealthy nation that is making many wrong decisions.

Then she makes strong arguments about how changing our governmental investment strategy will revive and strengthen the infrastructure and businesses that will create new jobs, sustainable energy and agriculture and great schools, and put us on the road to prosperity.

There is a lot of information here. It's worth every minute.

Buerkle Denies Women's Healthcare Access

Blueskygirl has long contended that Ann Marie Buerkle has even longer been no friend to women. This article from today's Cosmopolitan reports that Buerkle has voted against funding cancer screenings for women.

She is hereafter branded a "chump" who is being scrutinized at the new website, WomenAreWatching.org, along with other politicians ...candidates and office holders ... for their anti-women politics.

Blueskygirl has always wondered why the word misogyny has no real counter-equivalent. Hating women stands alone in the pantheon of -isms. Ann Marie Buerkle has not a shred of loyalty to women and our unique concerns. What an empty wasted life....

The New Site Every Woman Needs to Visit
Cosmopolitan November 8, 2011 by Zoƫ Ruderman

The elections today and one year from today—when we'll elect our next president—will have a huge impact on the lives of women all around the country. A number of politicians who are anti-women's rights are gunning for office and voting for them (or abstaining from voting for a pro-women's rights candidate) could mean limited or no access to birth control, the morning-after pill, affordable cancer screenings, family planning, and abortions, even for rape victims. That's why Planned Parenthood launched the site WomenAreWatching.org. It's designed to inform men and women about what various politicians stand for and help them make smart choices when voting.
The website launched this morning and Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards told us that the goal is to "let politicians know that the nearly six million supporters of Planned Parenthood are watching what they’re doing". Richards pointed to research that shows that it's women who determine the presidency, which is why she and PP "encourage [women] to pay attention to what politicians are saying, to be informed voters next November, and to protect women’s health and to expand access to women’s care".
Richards also stressed that this is a site for all people, not just staunch liberals and women who want abortion to remain legal. "It used to be either you were pro-choice or anti-choice," she said. "Now we’ve shifted away from that. The conversation is going far beyond pro-choice and it's becoming much broader. It's about access to birth control, family planning, and preventative care." Basically, if you're pro-women, this site is for you.
One of the most interesting sections on the site is called "Who We're Watching". It lists the "chumps" (politicians and leaders who pose a threat to women's rights) and "champs" (those who are furthering women's rights and supporting our health and well-being). Right now the chumps list includes Iowa Congressman Steve King who said "Planned Parenthood is invested in promiscuity” (guess he doesn't know many women use PP for cervical cancer protection and breast exams), Mitt Romney, Republican wannabe president, for not supporting emergency contraceptives, and New York Republican Ann Marie Buerkle, the Tea Party member who voted to stop funding that provides women with lifesaving cancer screenings. You can check out more of the chumps and the champs here.
We're thrilled that Planned Parenthood launched WomenAreWatching.org and we hope it helps women—and men—make informed decisions when voting today (especially in Mississippi where access to birth control and the morning-after pill is under threat) and a year from now.

Politics of Tea and Buerkle

It's enough to give Blueskygirl a good day!

Ann Marie Buerkle's big splash in Washington is drying up because of her own inaction and blinders.

We from her own district knew from before day one that she is from the Triassic. Dinosaur-like, she cannot change and grow. From her simple-minded, uncomplicated hatred of Planned Parenthood and "government get out of our business, women's uteruses excluded" mentality to her flag-waving pandering to veterans, her take on national politics lacks imagination and nuance.

This is no time in our nation's history to fear brains. It is time to work hard, to really bear down and figure out how to rebuild a future of national stability. It is definitely not time to revert to the tea party tactics of "no".

Thanks to Politico for this commentary by Dan Hirschhorn, 10/30/11:

They came to Washington to drown the government in the bathtub — and everything else was a distant second.
Within the massive freshman class of House Republicans is a much smaller subset of hardcore, self-styled citizen legislators who have done little to assure their reelection. They haven’t raised enough money or made much headway in building their next campaigns. Locals gripe that they haven’t sufficiently worked their districts. They’ve been reliable “nay” votes on whatever House leadership is pushing. None of them has qualified for the National Republican Congressional Committee’s incumbent-protection Patriot Program.
Many Republicans think they probably won’t be coming back — and say the freshmen will have no one to blame but themselves.
“They don’t care about a campaign or their reelection,” said former New York Rep. Tom Reynolds, a former NRCC chairman. “They got here their way, and they’re following through on what they said they’d do.”
Still, House campaign veterans say the laissez-faire attitude toward reelection will inevitably create some tension with a party campaign committee that has limited resources to prop up its largest majority in decades.
“There are certain standards that just need to be met for a person to win a competitive election, and it’s hard to see how they meet those standards,” said former NRCC Political Director Ed Brookover. “It’s always frustrating because [the NRCC] wants to help members, but members also have to help themselves.”
“It’s fine to bury your head in the sand and say you’re doing it differently, but these people aren’t aware of the millions of dollars that were spent on their behalf to get them there,” said Mike McElwain, another former NRCC political director. “It’s amazing to me the number of people who won and the only thing they recognize is their own campaigns. They don’t think about the state parties, the independent expenditures, the millions of dollars that were spent to get them there.”
Longtime Hill veterans and GOP operatives share the same lament: This happens after every wave election. Former Democratic Florida Rep. Alan Grayson, elected in the 2008 wave, was a bombastic presence on cable news but ultimately fell short in the nitty-gritty of reelection politics. Class of 1994 Republicans recall former Indiana Rep. John Hostettler as someone who never adapted to a two-year campaign cycle and held on to his seat for more than a decade thanks only to consistent bailouts from the NRCC.
“Any time you see a large group of legislators come in on a wave, there are many that aren’t prepared to adapt their message to the new realities without abandoning their principles,” said former Pennsylvania Rep. Phil English, a Washington-based lobbyist who informally advises some freshmen. “You frequently see people who are carried in and don’t want to play the political game. It’s an attractive facade to put up the first time around, but people have an expectation of what they want their elected representative to be, including someone who listens, and in a modern campaign environment, if you don’t have a war chest, you’re not in a position to respond.”
Most Republicans agree the freshman class has actually done better than expected at adapting to the permanent campaign necessary to stay in Washington, with the problems isolated to about six rookies. With a 25-seat majority, one top Republican quipped, “We probably have half a dozen to spare.”
“There’s always a small group of folks who aren’t quite there, but it’s a smaller group than I thought it would be, and the good news is there’s plenty of time to get with the program,” said former New York Rep. Bill Paxon, a former NRCC chairman.
“There’s a romance to not raising money and not raising PAC money,” English said. “But as a practical matter, all you’re effectively doing is depriving yourself of the ability to answer criticisms. This is a serious problem.”
Among those drawing quiet scorn on the GOP fundraising circuit are New York Rep. Ann Marie Buerkle, a nurse who upset former Democratic Rep. Dan Maffei last year but who raised a paltry $89,000 last quarter and has already drawn a rematch with Maffei; Rep. Joe Walsh, the cable news mainstay buffeted by personal and financial issues who raised just $150,000 last quarter and faces a tough primary against fellow GOP freshman Rep. Randy Hultgren; and Arizona Rep. Paul Gosar, who has raised less than $500,000 since upsetting former Democratic Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick, and now faces a rematch with Kirkpatrick, who is outpacing him in the money race.
The freshmen mostly acknowledge their fundraising challenges and promise things are about to pick up. After a taste of the budget-cutting axe, some political neophytes who would have been happy with one-term Hill careers are now convinced they need more time in Washington to finish a job that will get easier if their party can send President Barack Obama packing.
“I know why I came here,” Walsh told POLITICO. “I don’t want to be a professional politician, and I’m not going to be here for life. But that doesn’t conflict with the fact that I have to raise money to tell my constituents what kind of citizen-legislator I am.”
“I haven’t talked to anybody who says, ‘I don’t care if I get reelected,’” said freshman Pennsylvania Rep. Mike Kelly, who has turned in decent fundraising numbers but also has his own money to draw on from years as a successful car dealer. “Most folks, after being here for nine months, realize there’s so much more work to do and want to stay. Most people are starting to realize the clock is ticking. But there’s real work to be done, and it’s a balancing act,” said Kelly, who so far has drawn no serious challengers.
Some freshmen may win reelection in spite of themselves. North Carolina Rep. Renee Ellmers has been criticized for skimping on town halls and raised only $97,000 last quarter. But Ellmers, a nurse who squeaked by former Democratic Rep. Bob Etheridge last year, was buoyed by a redistricting process that made her mid-state seat significantly safer.
“I’m working hard, but it is difficult with so many freshmen competing for the same dollars,” Ellmers said. “All I can say is next quarter will be better. The only way we’re going to really make the changes we need [is] after 2012.”
Freshmen should consider how better campaigns could make them better lawmakers, said former Virginia Rep. Tom Davis, a former NRCC chairman.
“You’ll never be an effective legislator if you’re always being targeted and people think your tenure could be short-lived,” he said. “That aura of invincibility is just part of being a good legislator. If you’re walking around with a bull’s-eye on your back, you’re not going to be as effective.”
Florida Rep. Allen West, the conservative fundraising star of the freshman class, had similar advice.
“Raising money is the mother’s milk,” he said. “If you’re hoping to come back and fight for fiscal responsibility, you just have to do it.”
And with the White House and Senate up for grabs, operatives close to the GOP’s growing stable of independent expenditure groups are expecting less money to go around for House races on the bubble.
“It’s going to pale in comparison to what was spent on the House last year,” McElwain said.
Some freshmen say they’re doing just fine, contrary to what their Republican critics might say.
“Between working here full time and building a campaign full time,” Gosar said, “I think I’m doing pretty good.”

Ann Marie Buerkle: Lady of Mystery

Rep. Ann Marie Buerkle is lone New Yorker against job-training program
Thanks to Syracuse.com
Mark Weiner, Tuesday, October 18, 2011

Washington -- U.S. Rep. Ann Marie Buerkle stood alone among the 29-member New York congressional delegation last week when she voted against extending a program that retrains workers who lose their jobs because of international competition.
The House passed the Trade Adjustment Assistance Extension Act with bipartisan support, 307-122.

She's all "jobs, jobs, jobs" except when she's all "no, no, no jobs."

Blueskygirl can remember no time when Ms. Buerkle has waded into an unemployment line, social services waiting room, church pantry or Head Start program to talk with real people about how her Republican created, controlled and (so far) successfully stalled "economic recovery" plan is working out for the other 99%.

Buerkle is, of course, in the 1% and feeling no pain.

Blueskygirl looks forward to the time when Ms. Buerkle is, herself, unemployed. We need the rest.

Claquewatch NY: Claquers and Their Hobbies

Blueskygirl thinks one does wonder at senior male claquers whose two favorite politicians are Ann Marie Buerkle and Michele Bachmann.

Worthy for box office entertainment, maybe, but not for decision making with consequences, says Blueskygirl. Then again maybe it's just a hobby with them.

Auntie Buerkle Headline News: Praises President Obama's MLK Dedication Speech

President Obama Receives High Praise from Auntie Buerkle on his Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial Dedication Speech on the Mall Earlier Today
"President Obama hit it out of the park. He is brilliant. Our nation needs his leadership for another 4 years," she told reporters directly following the speech and ceremony.
She added, "there isn't an honest one in the bunch of GOP clowns running for president next year, with the possible exception of John Huntsman. It's embarrassing."
Mrs. Buerkle added that she had come down to the Basin this morning well before dawn and felt fortunate to just be present and happy to stand toward the rear of the crowd to let others move closer.

Claquewatch NY: On Civil Society

When Blueskygirl witnesses supporters of Ann Marie Buerkle behaving uncivilly toward some of the people who attend Buerkle's town hall meetings, and when Buerkle allows this to go on, meeting after meeting, Blueskygirl has to ask if these are actions similar to those that occurred at recent televised Republican debates.

Claquers: ask yourselves:
  • Does a death sentence, carried out, deny the commandment Thou Shalt Not Kill?
  • Does letting an uninsured person die without medical care fit with your moral teachings?
  • Does rejecting people who are not like you, any people, fit with Loving Thy Neighbor as Thyself?
Yet, on national television recently, carefully chosen audiences at Republican debates:
  • cheered for Texas governor Rick Perry's high number of executions;
  • shouted "let him die," drowning out a question to Ron Paul about an uninsured person with a fatal illness and no insurance;
  • booed a gay US soldier on active duty in Afghanistan who, in a video question segment, asked candidates' opinions on the US military's reversal of don't-ask-don't-tell.
US HR NY25 Claquers: are these audiences the people you want to be allied and associated with?

Blueskygirl wishes she had evidence that local Claquers are different, but she has none. Unfortunately the intolerance she witnesses at all of Ann Marie Buerkle's meetings causes her to suspect these people are quite similar to the Republican debates audiences.

And the presidential candidates, and Ann Marie Buerkle, do nothing to interrupt the divisiveness and hate. That speaks volumes.

As a civil society we must deplore this behavior in any leader or prospective leader, and in their followers.

We are a nation built on tolerance not hate. Every one of us has a responsibility to help promote an atmosphere where all people are treated humanely.

Town Hall Meeting Thursday Evening in Town of Onondaga

Thursday evening AMB will again graciously stand up at the front of the room and avoid answering questions.

She will thank everyone for coming and let us know that we are meeting in her own current home town. Then she will offer special thanks to the public officials from the Town of Onondaga for having us over for another chance to "find common ground."

She will give us a brief update of her most important work in Washington.

Then she begin to take, from a box, questions written on pieces of paper by constituents as they came through the foyer.

Her claque will vigorously defend her.

The people who have come with serious concerns will become frustrated when she avoids serious consideration of tough lines of questioning. She may even cut people off. (She has before.)

Watch Buerkle lose her cool when questioners try to pin her down.

She will continue to defend the wealthy, attack the US Senate and "the president" (not President Obama), and claim need for "certainty" for the "job creators", whatever the hell that is and whoever the hell they are.

So, come along but don't plan to have much fun, that is, unless you are in her claque:

Buerkle Confuses the Hippocratic Oath and the Hypocritic Oath

VA doctors and dentists, according to Ann Marie Buerkle's recent amendment to H.R. 2074, the Veterans Sexual Assault Prevention Act, can pay for continuing medical education out of their own pockets from now on. This is her especially cynical approach to cutting the budget.
She was a nurse one day long ago. As she graduated from nursing school she may have taken the "Florence Nightingale Pledge," similar to the Hippocratic Oath:
I solemnly pledge myself before God and in the presence of this assembly, to pass my life in purity and to practice my profession faithfully. I will abstain from whatever is deleterious and mischievous, .... I will do all in my power to maintain and elevate the standard of my profession, .... With loyalty will I endeavor to aid the physician, in his[sic] work, and devote myself to the welfare of those committed to my care.
Don't ever confuse her with Florence Nightingale. She is hard as nails.
Especially galling for veterans and those who support them in every possible way is that she wraps herself in the flag of veteran-love at every public opportunity, shaming anyone who would question her or her loyalty to her rigid beliefs and to her handlers and funders.
Documentation from the American Federation of Government Employees' website:

NVAC [National VA Council] Successfully Defends Medical Education Reimbursement: AFGE’s National VA Council recently blocked another attempt to eliminate reimbursement for continuing medical education (CME) programs for VA physicians and dentists -- and with bipartisan support. The full House Committee on Veterans' Affairs last week had a markup hearing to consider a number of health care bills, including an amendment introduced by Congresswoman Ann Marie Buerkle to H.R. 2074. The Buerkle amendment would have completely eliminated all reimbursement currently payable to full time, board certified VA physicians and dentists. This proposal to eliminate CME reimbursement was also included in the VA’s list of requested legislation submitted to House Speaker John Boehner earlier this year. The existing reimbursement amount of $1000 is very modest compared to the cost of the courses that clinicians must take to remain employed and certified, and it has not been increased since 1991. AFGE is working with lawmakers to increase the CME amount and expand eligibility.

Blueskygirl Appointed to Right-To-Life Board

Well, not really.

That would be as ridiculous as Ann Marie Buerkle being appointed as a Congressional Representative to the UN.

Fortunately the UN position is a ceremonial position with no power.

Blueskygirl hopes AMB will learn something while she is in NY about the complexities of the world and that Israel, for instance, is not without blame in the failure of the Peace Process with Palestine.

G. Gordon Liddy Interviews Ann Marie Buerkle

Ann Marie Buerkle interviewed by the G Man:

(btw, Liddy's tech crew spelled AMB's name incorrectly in the link.)

Ah, yes, remember G. Gordon Liddy. Plumber. Felon. Sex icon. Misogynist. Conservative radio talk show host. Just the sort of upstanding mature man to interview Ann Marie Buerkle.

Bio of Liddy's Career Highlights:
Liddy served four and a half years in prison in connection with his conviction for his role in the Watergate break-in and the break-in at the office of the psychiatrist of Daniel Ellsberg, the military analyst who leaked the Pentagon Papers [Blueskygirl - both with the blessings of President Richard M. Nixon]. Liddy has acknowledged preparing to kill someone during the Ellsberg break-in "if necessary"; plotting to murder journalist Jack Anderson; plotting with a "gangland figure" to murder Howard Hunt to stop him from cooperating with investigators; plotting to firebomb the Brookings Institution; and plotting to kidnap "leftist guerillas" at the 1972 Republican National Convention -- a plan he outlined to the Nixon administration using terminology borrowed from the Nazis. (The murder, firebombing, and kidnapping plots were never carried out; the break-ins were.)

Still Trusting Women After All These Years

Thank you to ThinkProgress, 9-16-2011, for this Constitutionally and rationally good news amidst a week of particularly unattractive political dogfighting. It restores Blueskygirl's confidence that there are still plenty of people in the nation who actually trust women:

POLL: MAJORITY OF AMERICANS ARE PRO-CHOICE, DESPITE GOP PUSH TO BAN ABORTION

A new CNN poll finds that an overwhelming majority of Americans still believe in a woman’s right to choose, with 78 percent of respondents saying that they want abortion to remain legal under any circumstances or under certain circumstances. Just 21 percent said they would support outlawing abortion under all circumstances.

The numbers are almost unchanged from a year ago — despite the concerted efforts of conservatives to severely restrict access to abortion on the state level. Seventy-seven percent of Americans identified themselves as pro-choice in 2009 and support has remained consistent over the last five years.

"Get government out of the way," of Women's Reproductive Health Care

Several statements by AMB on non-governmental interference, as in: "Get government out of the way," amended:

  • “We should be focusing on pursuing ideas and practices that encourage choice, innovation, and excellence in women's health care education,” said Buerkle      [AMB's statement on the recent HR charter schools bill, amended]
  •  “If we’re talking about creating jobs and getting our economy back on track, that’s a big piece,” Buerkle said. “Beyond that, I guess the question is whether you want the government telling you what kind of women's reproductive health care light bulb you can use.”       [AMB's statement on BULB on her first day in office, amended]
  • “The key here is not what I think — it’s what women who need health care the business owners think,” Buerkle said Monday. “I tell them that Darrell Issa has charged us to go out and talk to women who need reproductive health care the people about what regulations are impeding their success.”     [AMB's statement on federal regulations, amended]
And she finally gets it right:
Real health care reform ought to be enacted in incremental steps that preserves patient choice, protects access to health care, and controls costs without hurting job growth, reducing patient care, or slashing Medicare for seniors.  We need health care reform that puts medical decisions in the hands of doctors, families and patients, not an unaccountable bureaucracy.  In such a system, individuals and families would make the key decisions and control the dollars, not government bureaucrats.
[AMB on ObamaCare, not amended]

ClaqueWatch NY: Don't Like How Democracy Feels?

Bob Murfitt, preeminent claquer, commonly known on YouTube as MrBobbis, was not content with simply posting videos of Ann Marie Buerkle's recent town hall meeting in Clay. Instead of letting the videos speak for themselves, he had to alter them by adding comments and graphics criticizing constituents who spoke up when Buerkle refused to answer their questions.

As Buerkle found herself over her depth and speakers got nowhere with her, she cut them off and they became frustrated.

So, if someone you don't agree with, Mr. Murfitt, is trying to ask a follow-up question, you call them a hothead? Is this the best you can do?

Blueskygirl guesses the truth isn't good enough for the tea party faithful.

Ann Marie Buerkle Is Not Interested in You, Average Constituent

Blueskygirl is at a loss today, as she is many days, to understand why Ann Marie Buerkle continues to be such a powerful force in the lives of her right-leaning constituents.

Democracy requires participants to question the motivation of candidates, their qualifications, their ability to translate their life experiences into good policy and governance.

In addition, democracy asks voters to separate their emotional reaction to candidates from a long hard look at whether candidates have the voters' interests at heart.

Ann Marie Buerkle represents a district in upstate New York straddling the NY Thruway, once a thriving manufacturing corridor from Albany to Buffalo.

Today that district is solidly in a region we know as the rust belt. Recently the carcass of Carrier Corporation, world leader in air conditioning, was sold for scrap.

Oneida silverware, Buffalo china and Syracuse china are all manufactured in China. New Venture gears eventually came from overseas, made of inferior steel, and the last of New Venture Gear disappears by the end of this year. Crucible Steel's high quality steel is barely competitive with foreign, inferior steel. National Grid laid off 800 workers this year.

Inner cities are mostly in ruin, their inner city schools and neighborhoods increasingly deserted by professional parents who want the best education for their children, and who can blame them? Outlying malls surround empty storefronts in our  downtowns.

Rurally, small farmers struggle because their competition is huge and protected. Even the big farms here (with, astoundingly, 3 big barns!, which no one in the old days would have called a small farm,) struggle to compete.

In this landscape Ann Marie Buerkle, conservative, tea party sweetheart and "the pretty lady from Syracuse", tells us that she will never vote to raise taxes on the extremely wealthy people and corporations of this nation.

Glaringly missing from her vocabulary are words like poverty, homelessness, teacher layoffs, soup kitchens, living wage, unemployment. Missing from her intent in Washington are solving the home mortgage crisis, creating real jobs, improving the lot of farmers, and making good educations, from kindergarten to BAs, BSs, MAs, and yes, even MDs, accessible for the less and least fortunate among us. Missing is support for unions.

Rather, every single one of her decisions is made in favor of corporate interests. Thus she paves the way for increased contributions to her next campaign. Thus she pleases John Boehner.

Tea partiers, conservatives, Republicans: wake up and look at what Ann Marie Buerkle does every day. Is she looking out for your best interests and those of your neighbor? If she is not, push back and wake HER up. She needs to hear from you.
